3rd Primary School of Chios
The Erasmus+ activity at the 3rd
Primary School of Chios from 21 to 25 of October 2024, provided an enriching
experience for both teachers and students of Italy, Greece and Finland,
combining educational activities with cultural exploration and environmental
awareness.
The program begun with a warm welcome
ceremony, followed by a guided tour of the classrooms and school facilities.
Teachers then gathered in the school library for a meeting, where Mr. Stavros
Spyrakis, from the Environmental Educational Centre of Chios, presented the
activities of the center. Meanwhile, students participated in arts and crafts and
physical education activities, engaging with their peers in creative exercises
that promoted teamwork and cultural exchange.
Participants experienced a 2-kilometer
hike along the historic Turkish road in Aepos, guided by Professor Theodora
Petanidou from the University of the Aegean. The hike provided an opportunity
to explore the local flora and fauna while learning about the biodiversity of
the region. Following the hike, the group traveled to Pityos village where they
were then introduced to traditional local practices through a hands-on
pasta-making workshop and a lunch at a traditional tavern allowed participants to enjoy local dishes.
In the evening, participants reconvened in school for an open to public event
with the lecture by Professor Petanidou
titled “Aegean: A Land for Bees and Flowers,” where she shared her expertise on
the ecological richness of the region. The evening ended with a theatrical
performance by students, showcasing the myth of Mount Pelinnaio, Chios’s tallest
mountain. Furthermore, participants explored the "Fa" Valley,
embarking on a 4.1-kilometer trail to Lithi Village. During the hike, they
observed nature’s intricate relationships, including pollinators and human
impacts on the environment. In the afternoon, students participated in land art
activities, using natural materials to create artworks that reflected their
connection to nature. The cultural exploration continued with visits to the
Mastiha Villages, including Mesta and Pyrgi. These villages are renowned for
their historical significance, unique architecture, and the production of
mastiha, Chios’s unique resin. Participants toured the Mastiha Museum to learn
about the cultivation and uses of mastiha, before visiting Agios Georgios
Sykousis Village where a certificate ceremony was held, recognizing the
contributions and participation of all involved. The participants also had the
opportunity to visit the Town Hall, where they met with Mr. Giorgos Christakis,
the Deputy Mayor of Tourism. This meeting provided valuable insights into the
local tourism strategies and the cultural significance of the island.
Additionally, the group toured in Kampos area and visited a peanut butter
production workshop, where they learned about the local production processes
and the sustainable practices behind the business.
The activity strengthened the bonds
between participants and through outdoor lessons, environmental activities, and
cultural experiences, the event highlighted the value of diversity,
sustainability, and international cooperation.
